Hunslet Quarry loco 'Winifred' at Llanuwchllyn loco shed, BLR.

            After exile in North America since the 1960's historic Hunslet Quarry loco 'Winifred' is back on home soil.

This 2ft gauge 0-4-0ST built by Hunslet in 1885 with works no.364 was constructed for use at the Penrhyn Slate Quarries in North Wales. It was one of the batch of "Port Class" locomotives tipping the scales at 7ton 10cwt that saw use shunting at Port Penrhyn. The line from the quarry to the dock closed in 1962 and three years later rail operations in the quarry ceased making the steam loco fleet redundant. Four of the Penrhyn Railway locomotives found buyers in North America between 1963-66 and 'Winifred' was one of them moving to Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. It returned to Wales in April 2012 and is now based at the Bala Lake Railway.

The locomotive is seen here inside Llanuwchllyn loco workshops along with sister quarry loco Hunslet 780/1902 named 'Alice'.
