SM48-127 shunting at Zamość, Poland. 1996.

            Zamość could best be described as the "back of beyond". We had arrived here in the Lubelskie region of south east Poland at the standard gauge station on the branch from Zawada to Hrubieszów Miasto simply to get across town to Zamość Północ station. Północ station in the town was on the Linia Hutniczo-Siarkowa the 1524mm gauge (Steel & Sulphur Railway). Our plan being to travel on the broad gauge line as far as the border station at Hrubieszów Towarowy behind a PKP class ST44/2, then return on the standard gauge branch thus scoring both parallel routes. Alas this wasn't to be as a timetable poster in the standard gauge station showed services on the LHS line crossed out. Disaster ! The passenger service on the LHS line had been decimated with just one train a week still running, we had arrived on a Saturday but the one train a week to L'vov in the Ukraine was now Tuesdays only instead of Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The two other services a thrice weekly train from Zamość Północ to Kovel and the main train on the route the Olkusz to Magnitogorsk had both been cancelled and were never to run again.

The LHS line was primarily a broad gauge freight route from the Ukraine to the Upper Silesia region of Poland but the passenger services brought migrant works from the Ukraine and Central Russia to the mines and steel mills of Upper Silesia. It remains in use but these days is purely a freight only line. At least we were able to completed the standard gauge branch onto Hrubieszów Miasto as this has since lost its passenger service on 12.12.2004 but I never achieved a ride behind an 1524mm gauge class ST44/2.

The above shot was taken at Zamość standard gauge station with a class SM48 no.SM48-127 shunting vans in the extensive station sidings. The SM48's were not a large class in Poland compared to other diesel classes but 130 were built by Lugansk Locomotive Works in the USSR as heavy shunters and local trip engines for PKP.
