Leyton Public Libraries - Junior Opportunities, Leytonstone Branch Library, 1954/55 - printed by Curwen Press, Plaistow

            I had heard that the Leyton Public Libraries had a reputation for its printing (via Penrose Annuals) but until now I hadn't seen any in the flesh. You'd be hard to find any council or library service these days that took such care and attention to its own publications and publicity but the Borough of Leyton took obvious care even for ephemeral items such as these - booklets for library events, for both young people and adults, that were held at the Borough's two libraries - Church Lane, E11, and Lea Bridge Rd branch library, E10. The Borough, in north east London then forming part of Essex, from 1873 until 1965 when it was subsumed into the new London Borough of Waltham Forest.

 They're printed at the wonderful Curwen Press, a few miles down the road in Plaistow, and were designed by Douglas Coyne. The layout is considered and uses typical Curwen ornaments.

'Opportunities' encompassed a wide range of library and 'adult' education opportunities run by the Borough's librarians and included film shows, play reading (and performances) and discussion and debating groups.
