London & North Eastern Railway Company plan of docks at Hull, c1925

            From the inside of an illustrative folder issued in c1925 by the relatively newly formed LNER showing one of the many docks and harbours the railway companies owned. Hull was one of the jewels in the LNER's crown and this plan shows the layout, extent, accomodation and equipment to be found and that was available for the massive imports and exports the port saw. The plan also shows the railway system around the County and City of Kingston upon Hull (to give the city its full name) and so gives an indication of why it was famous for the number of level crossings to be found in this 'flat' city! Until the grouping in 1923 Hull was served by two separate railway companies - the dominant North Eastern Railway whose monopoly and rather poor management of freight traffic to and from the city in the 1870s had led to a second company being formed by local interests in an attempt to bring the NER to heel. The Hull & Barnsley Railway, as the 'new' line became, was never quite as successful as had been hoped for but needless to say led to a massive development in port facilities as they too built their own docks - the Alexandra Docks, at the time the largest in the UK. The two warring companies eventually joinded forces to built the adjacent King George Dock of 1914. At Grouping the two companies came under the same LNER management and so Hull was back where it had started! The mainstay of traffic here was coal and iron out along with ore, grains and oils in - alongside the city's massive fishing industry. 

The LNER, as well as issuing dock specific booklets and folders, also introduced a lavish handbook of their ports along with these fine, detailed plans that apaprently became very useful tools for enemy action during WW2.
