Heinz 57 Varieties - hwo many do you know? : from "Dishes with Dash", published by Heinz, Harlesden, London, c1950

There is a oft-heard tale that the "57" where simply pulled out of thin air and that the various publicity people then had to find 57 suitable products to ascribe to the list! Anyhow, this version appears in the c1950 "Dishes with Dash", the beautifully illustrated recipe book Heinz issued with drawings by Eric Fraser and written by A H Adair, dayed to c1950 but I wonder if it isn't earlier. This booklet, and other UK issued publicity, admits that 53 of the 57 were made in the UK at the company's then only plant at Harlesden in west London and the other 4 came from Canada, as Canadian tomatoes were best and so tomato ketchup, chutney, soup and juice were all imported. Anyhow "how many do you know" or dare you guess? The oddest name is "Euchred" and this certainly seems to have been been known in the parent company's US markets where Euchred pickles and figs were produced, described as being packed in a Heinz lightly spiced vinegar.
