Winter Sunshine holidays in Southern England : guide issued by the Southern Railway of England : Winter season 1947 - 48

            This would be the last such guide book issued by the Southern Railway as, in 1948, they would be nationalised as part of the new British Railways. Since their formation at the 1923 Grouping the Southern had continued the raiwlay tradition of advertising the various resorts and destinations they served for the tourist market. The Southern made great play of the more likely clement weather to be found at various South Coast resorts such as Brighton, Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight.

This guide 'as described in the diary of Leonora Fry' and 'decorated' by Margaret Bradley continues in that tradition and includes a range of resorts giving details of train services, hotel and accommodation facilities and winter activities. The winter of 1947 into 1948 came after one of the most severe winters Western Europe had experienced and here in the UK life was still very post-war austerity - many of these resorts having been closed 'for the duration'. I suspect some of them must have still felt fairly threadbare that winter but there would have been a desire to return to better and more 'normal' times.
