            The second edition of the vast publication the "Municipal and Road Engineers' Standard Catalogue, 1929 - 1932" contains many hundreds of pages of adverts showing plant, appliances and supplies across a wide range of 'municipal' engineering such as road construction, lighting, refuse disposal, water supplies and sewerage and park equipment. This page shows an advert for Broad & Co Ltd, based at South Wharf, Paddington in London and whose name can still be seen on city streets, such is the durability of their products! The company was formed in 1882 although, interestingly, by this date they appear to have been associated in some form with the large Stockport based company of John Needham & Sons Ltd. who are described as their 'manufacturers and distributors for the North of England, the Midlands and Scotland.

The advert shows a range of cast iron products including the "Ner-Rok" manhole or inspection pit cover, one of many sold as 'non-rocking' as motor traffic and road use increased. They also appear to have supplied lamp or street lighting columns as well as the tall sewearge ventilation columns that allowed the escape of methane and other gases to the atmosphere and that seem now to have gained the name 'stenchpipes'.
