Lettering in the County Hall, London : from 'Lettering, a handbook of modern alphabets' : Percy J Smith : A & C Black : London, 1936

            The author of this book, Percy John Delf Smith RDI (1882 - 1948) is an interesting character. Serving in WW1 he recorded scenes as an artist and later became a noted expert and teacher of lettering and typography, being a lecturer at the Camberwell School of Art as well as founding the Dorian (later Dorno) Studios. During the 1920s, the Dorian Studios were active in the field of design and lettering for a range of organisations such as Macfisheries.

These works were to be found in the London County Council's vast headquarters building County Hall, situated south of the River Thames almost opposite Westminster. County Hall was to become the seat of the successor Greater London Council until its abolition by the Conservative Government of 1986. The lettering, in blue on a white background, was 'planned by the author and carried out by his students'. It could well have been a link with his work at Camberwell School of Art as this was an LCC institution.
