Accrington Corporation Transport Department - Jubilee, 1907 - 1957 : Borough of Accrington, Lancashire : 1957

            During the 1950s many British municipal transport departments celebrated their golden jubilee, a result of the great wave of once leased tramway systems that fell available to municipal operation under the 1870 Tramways Act and that were then subsequently electrified. This showed many towns and cities as 'go-ahead' especially as tramway electrification was often the the key to the development of the municipal electricity generation department, tramways being an excellent base load.

Tramway operation had come to Accrington in 1886 when the council's tram rails were put to use by the newly formed Accrington Steam Tramway Company. The town saw the steam cars see out the full 21 year lease but under an Act of Parliament promoted in 1905 the Borough acquired the powers to reconstruct, electrify and extend the tramways and this took place in 1907. Accrington saw through services operating with the neighbouring authorities of Blackburn and Haslingden and by 1928, when the first motor bus arrived, the fleet stood at 38 tramcars.

By the late 1920s many such 'first generation electric' tramways were seeing the assets and infrastructure in need of replacement or modernisation and many smaller systems, such as Accrington, turned increasingly to the rapidly developing technology of the motor bus - for use as both feeders services to tram routes saving the cost of extensions, as well as complete replacement. Within four years Accrington's trams had gone, the last one operating on 6 January 1933.

By the time of the Jubilee the fleet consisted of 59 vehicles and saw the underaking's routes coordinated with those of Blackburn, Haslingden, Rawtenstall and the Ribble Motor Services. The brochure, neatly designed and produced, includes the usual message from the Mayor, and illustrations of the 'good old days' and the modern fleet. Sadly no designer nor printer is shown but someone put some time and thought into this little booklet.
