Design magazine ; Number 54 ; June 1953 : issued by the Council for Industrial Design : editor Michael Farr

            The long running "Design" magazine issued by the Council for Industrial Design was a pivotal journal in the history of mid-20th Century design here in the UK as it covered a wide range of design, product and marketing subjects. The June 1953 issue was mostly concerned with the topic of Coronation souvenirs, marking the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II that year.

The CoID had set up a Coronation Souvenirs Committee that was intended to mark the best practice when it came to the very wide range of products and material issued mark the great event - and to show 'official' distaste for anything was was considered unworthy of British design in the New Elizabethan Age! As well as the Committee of the great and good, a number of Technical Assessors from various trade bodies were selected, these covering fields such as printing, woven fabrics, greetings cards, 'fancy' goods and pen manufacturers. As well as 'encouraging the improvement of designs the CoID also directly assisted manufacturers by issuing guidance as to correct symbols and emblems to be used. This included the Crown and Royal Arms symbol seen on this cover and that had be re-drawn for the new reign by designer Milner Gray. Gray (1899 - 1997) was one of the key figures in UK design circles during the century.
