            A very early edition of the instruction manual and handbook for the Kenwood Electric Food Mixer - this being the A.200 model, the predecessor to the famous Kenwood Chef. Although undated it shows the company name as Woodlau Industries and this was changed to Kenwood Manufacturing Co. in 1949 and the concern had moved to the address in Hipley Street, Old Woking, in 1947 - therefore I think it can be assumed that this dates from 1948. As well as instructions the booklet includes some recipes that the food mixer could be used to help produce.

The founders of the company were Kenneth Wood and Roger Laurence and they produced their first electric toaster in 1947. Wood was not just a engineer; in many ways his skill was at creating a market for such then 'luxury' electrical appliances and it was this that helped the company flourish, expanding into other domestic appliances. At the time the A.200 was first produced such appliances were real novelties in austerity Britain where the uptake of such 'white goods' had, traditionally, been slow. The company were then part of the greater affluence in the British economy that marked the 1950s. Kenwood became part of Thorn Industries in 1968 when Wood left the company.
