London Underground Group : Operating Manager's Personal Letter No. 11 : 30 March 1931 : map of London's Railways

            In the 1920s and early '30s the Operating manager of the Underground Group's railways, J. P. Thomas, issued a series of "Operating Manager's Personal Letters" that were circulated to a limited number of staff. The Letters contain details of pertinent topics and deal, in a comprehensive way, with various schemes of modernisation and extension that the Underground was undertaking. They often include many useful drawings, diagrams and maps to illustrate the subject matter.

Letter 11 was issued on 30 March 1931 and takes a first look at the planned western extensions to the Piccadilly line. To help demonstrate the importance of this, and the northern extensions, the Letter includes a sketch map of the railway's of London; this shows the Underground alongside the suburban lines of all four main line railways and cheekily includes the Metropolitan Railway, still a seperate entity at the time, firmly in the Underground group. The map also differentiates the Southern's already extensive third rail electric system that was being rapidly expanded across their suburban network. It also shows how much of an incursion - carefully spaced between extisting lines - the Morden extension was.

 The map is by F. H. Stingemore who drew the public pocket map of the system at the time as well as many other maps and diagrams, such as this, at the time.
