            During 1947 the electrified Central line was extended through its new tunnels via Stratford out to Leyton where it took over the existing steam operated Liverpool St - Epping/Ongar service. The services beyond Leytonstone were introduced in stages and the old LNER service was progressively withdrawn - this leaflet gives details of the steam shuttle services that ran after 5 May 1947 from Leytonstone to Woodford, Loughton, Epping and Ongar - and the Woodford - Ilford loop before these too formed part of the new Central line.

These works formed part of the war delayed "New Works Programme" projects part of which saw the extensions both east and west of the Central line. The Central line works were the first to be restarted and largely completed during the period of post-war austerity and included the LNER project to electrify the Shenfield mainline suburban services.
