Towards a brighter outlook : advert issued by Revo Elecric Co. Ltd., Tipton : In : Design No. 96, December 1956 : Council of Industrial Design : London : 1956

            One of a series of adverts in the December 1956 issue of "Design" magazine from various manufacturers of street lighting equipment. Street furniture made frequent appearances in Design as it was a "hot" topic partially part of the post-War town planning movement that was much concerned with streetscapes and also because many local authorities were replacing their pre-war street lighting installations. The latter had led to quite the backlash, in magazines such as Architectural Review and Design, and the Royal Fine Arts Commission had become involved. The outcome was a number of designs, as seen here, being "approved" in that their design made less of an visual impact than others. During the 1960s the CoID also issued details of similar approved products. 

This advert was issued by the well known Revo Electric Co. Ltd. of Tipton in Staffordshire who manufactured both columns and lanterns as well as offering an installation service. The photograph shows a typical replacement scheme with an earlier adapted gas lamp column, with an extension for an electric lantern that looks like an early Wardle sodium, being replaced by ranks of Revo columns with their "Silverblue" mercury lanterns. 

This is the first time I have seen a catalogue 'name' for this style of column and bracket - the "Epic". As with many such concrete columns the weak spot in the design was the junction between column and bracket and in later years failure was common.
