Columbian Ground Squirrel - a photo on Flickriver

             While travelling to Merritt, British Columbia two weeks ago we stopped for a few moments at the Zopkios rest area at the Coquihalla summit. There was still quite a bit of snow in the area but also a few patches of bare grass surrounding some conifer trees at the rest stop.

I noticed a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye and thought that it was perhaps a squirrel. Then I saw more movement. When I looked closely I realised that I had found a small colony of ground squirrels.

I had never had a chance to photograph ground squirrels before so I grabbed my Canon camera and 500mm lens out of the trunk of the car. Stopping for a long time was not in our plans but I managed to grab a few shots handheld before we had to move on. I would definitely love to try for more images if I have another opportunity in the future.
