SAR arc over Lithuania - a photo on Flickriver

            Most of us have already enjoyed the G2 level magnetic storm that took place on Sunday (2024-03-03). However, I only now had a chance to fully process the frames and stitch together this 28-frame panorama. This is a moment that captures not the usual aurora borealis, but a phenomenon known as the SAR (Stable Auroral Red) arc.

On Sunday evening, after a family celebration, we decided not to go home, but to go somewhere outside the city lights. We settled down a little north of Vilnius. In the very first frame, I noticed that the aurora borealis had a somewhat distant red stripe stretching across the entire sky. However, it was not visible to the naked eye, only the camera was able to capture the bright red color.

This is not as rare a phenomenon as Steve, but it is also an incredibly interesting one.

The SAR arc - although called the Stable Auroral Red arc - is not an aurora borealis. High above the Earth, at an altitude of 40,000 km, very strong electric currents flow. Just as heated electrical wires can glow, so do these cosmic electric currents sometimes glow! For this to happen, an auroral storm is needed, which "heats" the current to red! It's like outer space! Who would have thought that such things happen above our heads...
