Thames & Severn Canal, Coates, Gloucestershire. Sapperton Tunnel (1)

            The Western Portal. This tunnel is on the, now near derelict, Thames & Severn Canal, and was first opened to traffic in 1789, when it was then the longest tunnel ever dug in England, some 2 miles, 297 yards (3.49Km) in length. 

Unusually, it has no towpath, the boats were propelled through the tunnel by a practice known as "legging" - the boatmen lay on their backs on top of the cabin, and, with their feet against the tunnel roof, "walked" the boat through the water, whilst the horse which usually towed the boat, was led over the hills to the other end of the tunnel, - clearly, the horse got the best part of the deal! The tunnel was in use until the early 1900's, and this portal was partially restored in 1976/77.
