A Large Arts and Crafts Villa - North Caulfield

            This large, double storey Reformist (Arts and Crafts) style villa has been built in the Melbourne suburb of North Caulfield.  

Built between Federation (1901) and the years just after the Great War (1914 - 1918), the tall chimneys and the roughcast stuccoed wall treatment of the villa are very Arts and Crafts inspired as is are the rounded bay windows featuring leadlight glass.  The unusual bowed balcony with its tiling detail and, the half-timbered walls of the rear part of the property are also in keeping with the Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia.  The villa has some beautifully executed fretwork underneath the gables.  Unusually it has Ionic orders on the columns that support the porch.  I have never seen this on Arts and Crafts architecture, so I am not sure whether these were original, or an attempt to change the look at a later stage.  With the rest of the villa intact, I believe they may be original.

This villa of grand proportions must have been built for someone of affluence with a large family 

As in London, there was a huge expansion in Melbourne after the Great War in 1918, with ribbon development estates with names like "Oakhill" and "Golf Links" popping up seemingly overnight along rail lines and tram lines.  These quickly became suburbs where the newly created and newly moneyed middle classes chose to settle, away from the crowded inner city with its dark Victorian houses and slums.  These suburbs gained the mocking title of "Metroland".

Representing modernity the inspiration of these "Metroland" houses were derived from the Reformist and Arts and Crafts movement in England as well as the more modern lines of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architectural styles that were in vogue in the 1920s and 1930s.
