Paddington Comforts Scout - a photo on Flickriver

SCOUT: *Sniffles and sobs in Paddy’s lap, holding tightly to Dolly.*

PADDY: “There, there, Scout. It will be alright.”

SCOUT: *Sobs.* “No it won’t, Paddy. She is going away.” *Sobs and sniffles.*

PADDY: “But Scout, we all knew that this was a very special visit, but visits don’t last forever.”

SCOUT: “That’s not true, Paddy. Daisy-Maud, Danny Boy, Orson and Algie came from Norfolk to visit Jago, and they stayed! They didn’t go home!” *Sobs and sniffles.*

PADDY: “Well, that’s true, Scout.” *Cuddles Scout. “But this time the visit is only short.”

DUCKIE: “Oh! Whatever is wrong? Why is Scout crying, Paddy?” *Concerned.*

PADDY: “Oh Duckie, Scout is unhappy because he overheard Daddy talking to Mummy Marian on the bearphone, talking about travel arrangements for Granny Duck to go back home to the Netherlands…”

SCOUT: “And I don’t want Granny Duck to go!” *Cries more.*

DUCKIE: “Oh poor Scout! Do you know what, Scout?”

SCOUT: *Sniffles.* “What, Duckie?”

DUCKIE: “I don’t want Granny to go either. I haven’t seen her in a little while, and I shall miss her, but she has to go home.”

SCOUT: “But why?”

DUCKIE: “Whilst we have made her very comfortable here, she doesn’t live here. Mummy Marian’s is her home.”

GRANNY DUCK: “My Grand Sunny granddaughter is right, Scout. I will miss Duckie very much, and you too, but I miss my duck pond in Groningen, too. I have had a lovely time here at Daddy’s house and meeting you all and playing hide-and-seek, and riding on trams. However, I also miss your best friend Peter, and Paddy’s best friend Oleg. They are my friends, and I am worried about them. I need to go home to make sure they are alright.”

SCOUT: “But… but when will I see you again… Granny Duck?”

GRANNY DUCK: “Why, the next time you come to play with Peter, sweet little Scout.”

SCOUT: *Stops crying.* “Really, Granny Duck?”

GRANNY DUCK: “Of course, little Scout. I should like it if you visited me.”

DUCKIE: “And I will come too, so I can see Granny, Scout.”

SCOUT: *Sniffles and smiles.* “That would be nice, Duckie.”

GRANNY DUCK: “Anyway, I am still not going home for a few days yet, little Scout, so we can still have some fun together, and maybe another tea party. You like tea parties, don’t you?”

SCOUT: “Oh yes,” *Thinks.* “So long as I don’t have to eat yucky worms and bugs, Granny Duck.”

GRANNY DUCK: “I promise, I won’t make you eat them, Scout.”

DUCKIE: “Come on, Scout, let’s all go and play hide-and-seek. It’s sunny out in the garden now.”

SCOUT: “Alright, Duckie! Let’s go.” *Climbs out of Paddy’s lap and follows Duckie.*

PADDY: “Thank you for your help, Granny Duck. I really appreciate it.” *Smiles.*

GRANNY DUCK: “You’re welcome, Paddy.” *Smiles.*

SCOUT: “Come on, Granny Duck and Paddy! Let’s play hide-and-seek!”

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy (www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/). Granny Duck who is Duckie’s Grandmother suddenly turned up one day at Mummy Marian’s house after being absent for almost a year! Granny Duck did indeed swim the VOC (Batadvia) route and finally made it here after a somewhat circuitous route that took in Malibu, Christmas Island and New Zealand before finally arriving on picturesque St Kilda Beach! My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Duckie I saw when I was at a Sunday market on a stall of homemade knitted and crocheted items. She caught my eye straight away with her happy, smiley face and bright colours. I think she finds life with my bears intriguing and perhaps a little confusing, however she is learning.
