The balconies of Thomas Belsom's House - Sturt Street, Ballarat

            This boldly coloured building at 33 Sturt Street is one of the most distinctive in Ballarat's rich mix of architecture.  The facade is covered in bright blue tiles.  

Renovated from an original one storey 1865 building in 1891 for Ballarat man Thomas Belsom, the two storey building we see today features two rounded balconies and Art Nouveau windows.  The fashionable Art Nouveau style was continued with the interior decoration. 

This is a truly striking example of Edwardian Flemish Baroque architecture, which was a very modish style in Great Britain at the time.  There are no surviving comparative examples anywhere else in Victoria.
