The Front Entrance to "Braeside", a Late Victorian Weatherboard Villa - Korumburra

            Built in 1899, "Braeside" is a large Victorian villa that may be found in the South Gippsland town of Korumburra.

Sprawling elegantly across its extremely large block, "Braeside" is a classically proportioned villa that is typical of late Victorian architecture in Australia.  It features a wonderful corrugated iron roof with a central skylight to provide light into the middle of the house.  A bull nosed verandah runs around three sides of the villa, providing shade throughout the day and keeping the rooms of "Braeside" cool.  The verandah features a mixture of elegant cast iron lacework panels flanked by wooden fretwork and support posts.  "Braeside's" name is flaboyantly picked out in gold on an etched glass panel which appears in an ornamnetal apex of the verandah in front of the central front door.  As was the fashion of the 1890s, the grand front door features ornate stained glass windows above and around it.   Like other houses in the area, "Braeside" has been elevated.  This feature keeps the house safe from the hard, damp ground during winter, and allows air to circulate beanth the house during hot Australian summers to cool it, making the villa a more pleasant place to be in extreme weather.  As it is on the downside of a hill, it also protects "Braeside" from potential run off flooding.  As logging was a typical industry in the area, it is not unusual to find a house of this size to be made of wooden weatherboards, even if the owners are of a higher social standing than others around them.  Like everyone in the district, the owners would have wanted to help their town prosper and develop.  What better way of doing it than supporting the local saw mill and carpenters?

"Braeside" sits well back from the road behind a rustic white picket fence - which is picturesquely shabby - amid a well established garden of roses and other perennials, and the garden features several large pine trees, which were part of the original garden.

Korumburra is a medium-sized dairy and farming town in country Victoria, located on the South Gippsland Highway, 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.  Surrounded by rolling green hills, the town has a population of a little over 4,000 people.  Korumburra has built itself on coal mining (after the discovery of a coal seam in 1870), local forestry and dairy farming.  Whilst the coal seam has been used up, farming in the area still thrives and a great deal of dairy produce is created from the area.  The post office in the area opened on the 1st of September in 1884, and moved to the township on the railway survey line on the 1st of November 1889, the existing office being renamed Glentress.  The steam railway connecting it with Melbourne arrived in 1891.  Whilst the train line has long since operating commercially, it has found a new life as the popular tourist railway the South Gippsland Railway which operates a heritage railway service between the major country centre of Leongatha and the small market town of Nyora.
