The Former Residence of Mr. Upton Vincent Knight - Leongatha

            This dwelling, the former residence of local successful businessman Upton Vincent Knight, in the South Gippsland town of Leongatha is one of the best interwar dwellings in the Mediterranean style, not only in the town, but in the entire Shire of Woorayl, and is complemented by its original fence.  

The villa is a rendered brick single storey Interwar Mediterranean style building with a multiple hipped terracotta tiled roof. It has a contiguous return verandah at a slightly flatter pitch supported by a large corner pier containing arcades at the two sides carried on short paired columns standing on tall rendered pedestals. The central of the three arches is wide with three centres, while the outer arches are semicircular. The windows are three part double hung, planted on the wall and supported by brackets. There is only one chimney, which is a plain brick double flue set at the rear of the main roof. The original fence is constructed with square rendered piers with caps and a plinth containing elaborate wrought iron panels and matching gate.  Historically, it is one of a group of dwellings that demonstrate the significant phase of residential development in Leongatha that occurred in the interwar period.

The villa was constructed by J. L. Rowden in 1936 as the residence for Mr. Upton Vincent Knight (1901 – 1989), the proprietor of Knight's Garage in Bair Street Leongatha which was established in 1926. The business established then still exists today and is still in the same family by way of Upton Knight’s son-in-law.

Inter-War Mediterranean style was a regionalisation of Georgian domestic architecture.  The style was introduced to Australia by the Professor of Architecture of the University of Sydney, Leslie Wilkinson (1882 - 1973) in 1918 after perceiving a similarity in temperature between temperate coastal regions of Australia and European Mediterranean environments.  Practitioners in this style usually had a very wealthy clientele who wanted something a little more chic and European than the Spanish Mission style that came out of America at the same time.

Leongatha is a town in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, South Gippsland Shire, Victoria, Australia, located 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. The town is the civic, commercial, industrial, religious, educational and sporting centre of the region.   The Murray Goulburn Co-operative Co. Limited, is a farmers' co-operative which trades in Australia under the Devondale label, and has a dairy processing plant just north of the town producing milk-based products for Australian and overseas markets.  First settlement of the area by Europeans occurred in 1845. The Post Office opened as Koorooman on 1 October 1887 and renamed Leongatha in 1891 when a township was established on the arrival of the railway.  The Daffodil Festival is held annually in September. Competitions are held and many daffodil varieties are on display. A garden competition is also held and there are many beautiful examples throughout the provincial town.  The South Gippsland Railway runs historical diesel locomotives and railcars between the market and dairy towns of Nyora and Leongatha, passing through Korumburra.
