Il castello non è medievale, almeno non nell'edificazione. E' stato voluto dal re Ludwig II di Baviera ed è stato ultimato nella seconda metà dell'800. Ludwig II ci visse già da quando era in costruzione e non fece in tempo a vederlo interamente ultimato. Quando morì misteriosamente era ultimato solo il primo piano. I successori non finirono mai i lavori e restò così com'è fino ad oggi. Il castello è un museo che racconta la storia di se stesso e come ci si viveva all'epoca della sua costruzione; risulta essere il monumento più visitato della Germania e il più fotografato in Europa. 
E' uno dei castelli più affascinanti del mondo e la sua architettura è stata presa spesso come soggetto di puzzle ritratto in  tutte le stagioni. Tra le curiosità da elencare c'è quella che narra che sia stata la fonte di ispirazione dei castelli delle favole narrate dai lungometraggi di Walt Disney.

The medieval castle is not, at least not in the building. It 'was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was completed in the second half of 800. Ludwig II lived here since he was already under construction and did not have time to see it completely finished. When he died mysteriously he had completed only the first floor. The successors never ended work and remained as is until today. The castle is a museum that tells the story of himself and how we lived at the time of its construction; It appears to be the most visited monument in Germany and the most photographed in Europe.
It is one of the most beautiful castles in the world and its architecture was often taken as a subject puzzle portrait in all seasons. Among the curiosities it is to list what has it that it was the source of inspiration of the castles of the fairy tales told by the films of Walt Disney.
