Stone House Ranch and Corral - a photo on Flickriver

Stone House Station was built during the days of Nevada Territory (1861-1864), and its story seems right out of a western movie. While operating  as a freight and stage stop, there was a shoot-out where the owner was killed. Operated for many years by the widow, it became the Monitor Valley's social center. Weddings, dances and other parties were held on the second floor. When no longer needed as a freight and stage station, it became a ranch headquarters for many decades. At one point it was owned by old Nevada bigshot Key Pittman. Ranch consolidation in the 1960's or 70's led to the abandonment of the buildings. Some of the buildings were used as a camp by drillers exploring for minerals in the Toquima range in the late 20th century. The meadows and corrals are still in use for ranching.
