Day's End - Clingman's Dome, Great Smoky Mountains

            A view about 20 minutes after sundown at Clingman's Dome in the Smoky Mountains.  Clingman's Dome is at 6,643 feet above sea level.  The dead tree is a Fraser fir.  The fir trees in the Clingman's Dome area are being destroyed by a small insect, the Balsam Woolly Adelgid.  The insect in causing major havoc with the fir trees at higher elevations.  The park service is working hard to save the trees but extinction remains a possibility.
