Street prostitute five - a photo on Flickriver

(Ronda, her young boyfriend, Melvin, and I are in my car, half an hour after Ronda was released from jail following a court hearing.

"I'd rather not do any dope—I really would—I'd rather not. It's kind of weird. It's the first time I've ever gotten out of jail and didn't want to get high."

"Shit, Ronda," Melvin starts, "you—"

Interrupts Ronda, "That matron told me, 'You'll be back!' I said, 'To hell I will!' She says, 'You'll always come back.'"

As we leave the downtown traffic behind, and are nearing the relative peace of Midtown, I say, "Ronda, I'd like to get some pictures of you the day you...got out of jail."

"Now? "

"Yeah."

"Oh, okay. Well, where can we take a picture at? Name it, I don't care. I don't really want my picture taken, but we'll do it if you insist."

"How about Argonne?"

"Argonne's fine. Give me a wall. Something to sit on."

On a wall on Argonne, I shoot some pictures of Ronda and Melvin together, then say I need some photos of just Ronda.

And to my relief, Melvin stands up, his eyes toward Fifth.

"I'm going to go up there," he says. "I'll be back in five minutes."

"Okay," Ronda says. "Good-bye."

"Don't go nowhere now."

"I'm not. I'll come up there if you're not back when I'm through."

"All right, don't go nowhere though!"

"I won't," says Ronda.

"Promise?"

"I promise. I'll be right here, baby."
