01/100 Strangers (Round III). - a photo on Flickriver

Having been in two minds to whether I did another round of 100 Strangers I was almost pushed into it by Guillaume (my Stranger N°92 of Round II). I saw him again not long after I’d taken his photo and put it onto Flickr. He and his wife have apparently become addicted to them and have been checking each day to see if there was a new one. Plus Michel, (Stranger N°99) thought I ought to give it a go too. So to keep my rather small “fan club” happy here we go.

As it was lovely day I wasn’t going to stay inside. I knew where I wanted to go, so headed off in that direction and managed not to take any detours on route. I saw a load of people sitting on the grass by the river, but wasn’t near enough to tell if they were all adults, or a group of school children out from one of the Holiday Schools. I walked along the riverbank and saw that they were a group of cyclists, so when I was near enough asked if they had a bit of time.

We hit a problem, as they all looked a bit stuck, so I asked if they spoke English and when one of them said “yes” I changed languages. They are over here on a bike ride across France and gave me the details of the idea behind the ride. Meet Alex, he’s 33 and was born in Newport in the UK and has been living in Spain for the last three years. When I asked him what he did he said a cook, I double checked if he meant a cook or a chief and he said cook. When he’s not working he love to cycle around France and will be here until the end of this month.

For a change I also asked him what had he wanted to be when he was a child. He said he couldn’t think of a job that he remembered wanting to do, but his first ambition was to climb Mount Everest and then ski down the other side. He admitted that, at that point he’d never skied or seen a real mountain. I then asked what food he’d hated as a child and he said lentils and mushrooms.

I took four photos of Alex and chose the main one as it really was the best, but have added a 2nd photo where he’s smiling. I asked him to think of a plate full of lentils and mushrooms and make the face he used to pull as a child. (Comment shot 2). I also took a photo of the group of them while they were mending tyres, resting or clearing up after the meal they had just finished, (comment shot 3).

Alex was really easy to talk to and very polite. He asked about the project and I explained the ideas behind it and we chatted about other things too before I thought it was time allow them to get themselves organised for the next part of their ride.
