The Mezquita of Cordoba is a historic building in the city of Cordoba in Spain. It is one of the main attractions of the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The original building was built in the 8th century as a mosque by the Moorish rulers of Cordoba. It was one of the largest and most impressive mosques in Europe and served as an important center of knowledge and culture for the Islamic world.

In the 11th century, the Mezquita was expanded with a number of chapels and a choir, which greatly changed the appearance of the building. These expansions were done in the Christian style, indicating that the city was under Christian rule at that time.

In the 13th century, the Mezquita was expanded even further with the addition of a cathedral in the central nave of the building. This cathedral was intended for the large number of Christian pilgrims who came to Cordoba.

In the 16th century, the Mezquita was restored and adapted to the style of the Renaissance. This led to the removal of many of the original Islamic elements and the addition of Christian decorations.

In the 19th century, the Mezquita was restored again and the cathedral was removed, so that the building looked more like a mosque again. This led to the preservation of many of the building's original features.

In the 20th century, the Mezquita was again restored and re-adapted to the Renaissance style. This led to even more removal of the original Islamic elements and the addition of even more Christian decorations.

In the 21st century, the Mezquita was restored again, with the aim of bringing the building as close as possible to its original state. This led to the removal of many of the later modifications and the preservation of as many of the original Islamic elements as possible.
