The Bristol 603 family was designed by Dudley Hobbs and introduced in 1976 as a replacement for the Bristol 411 along with the Zagotabuilt Bristol 412. Hobbs strived to make the car more spacious and aerodynamic, while also using flatter body panels that would be easier to shape

The 603 was a morestreamlined design with a much greater glassed area than the outgoing 411, with more interior space than any preeceeding Bristol. he original 603 was offered in two versions, primaryly down to the fuel crisis, the 603E with a 5,211cc V8 and the 603S with the larger 5,900cc Chrysler V8.

As the energy crisis eased the 603 Series 2 followed with all cars getting the 5.9 litre as standard, the redsesign saw the head lamps set in the grille

For what should have been the Series 3 update for 1982 Bristol for the first time chose to name their cars, after famous planes of the Bristol Aviation Company. The Series 3 update came in two options, the Bristol Britannia (a name used for a long distance TransAtlantic airliner) was the standard version, while the Bristol Brigand (a light fast dive bomber) added a Rotomaster turbocharger to the Chrysler V8 engine and a torque converter originally used on the 440 V8 to cope with the extra performance, which saw the Brigand capable of 150 mph. The Brigand could be distinguished from the Britannia by the bulge in the bonnet needed to accommodate the turbocharger, and also had alloy wheels as standard equipment.
