Designed by Peter Varga and developed under the internal project number 982 (the natural progression of the previous 981 model) the fourth generation Boxster and third generation Cayman was launched with the model number 718, a number that eludes to the 718, which won the Targa Florio race in 1959 and 1960. Now powered by 4 cylinder Turbo charged engines against the six cylinder naturally aspirated engines of the earlier model

The 718 Boxster was introduced in January 2016, and premiered at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The 718 Cayman joined the range in April at the Beijing Motor Show. With ew horizontally-opposed flat-4 turbocharged engines at 2.0-litre (Boxster/Cayman) and 2.5-litre (Boxster S/Cayman S) The S model turbocharger utilizes Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) technology

The exterior of the 718 Boxster and Cayman is very similar to the third generation, there are changes to the rear of the car, which now has a long black-trim bar across the rear connecting the two taillights. The headlights and bumper are also heavily reworked and the mirrors revised.

The entry level Cayman and Boxster and Boxster-Cayman T has a 1988cc Flat 4 Turbo producing 295bhp, while the more sporty S a 2497cc engine of 345bhp rising to 360bhp for the 2017 GTS. In 2020 Porsche introduced a 3995cc naturally aspirated Flat 6 producing 395bhp for the new GTS and 414bhp on the new GT4
