The BMC ADO17 family of cars was originally introduced as a large family car in September 1964, initially sold under the Austin marque as the Austin 1800, then by Morris as the Morris 1800, by Wolseley as the Wolseley 18/85, and later the Austin 2200, Morris 2200 and Wolseley Six. The 1800 was voted European Car of the Year for 1965. Both Alec Issigonis and Pininfarina worked on its exterior. The technology "under the skin" was also unconventional and ahead of its time, including Hydrolastic suspension and an example of inertia-controlled brake proportioning, in the form of a valve which transferred braking force between front and rear axles as a function of sensed deceleration rather than as a function of fluid pressure.

The Mk.II was an updated version of the original Super Landcrab (1964-68) launched in May 1968. This featured a cheaper and more conventional interior, revised front grilles and other trim, and for the Austin and Morris models the slim, horizontal rear lights were replaced by vertical "fin" lights which gave a family look along with the smaller ADO16 range. Mechanical changes included larger road wheels, a higher second gear and final drive ratio for the manual transmission, and conventional suspension bushes replacing the roller bearimgs of the Mark 1, compression ratio increased boosting output by 5hp to 86bhp Sold in two stages of tune, the standard car with 86bhp and the S version with 96bhp.

A facelift Mark III version followed from 1972-75 with another change of grille bringing into line with the sister Austin versionand interior improvements that included a conventional floor mounted handbrake. The range now also included the six cylinder Austin 2200, Morris 2200 and Wolseley Six. While 1800 versions of the Austin and Morris were continued, the Wolseley 18/85 was dropped..
