Founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach who had been technical director of Daimler until 1907.
He founded the new company in 1909 with his son Karl Maybach as director, initially to produce petrol and diesel aircraft and Zeppelin engines, and later engines for rail cars.
Their first experimental car came in 1919 with a production car unveiled at the 1021 Berlin Motor Show. Between 1921-40 the company produced luxury cars as well as heavy duty Diesel engines for ships and the railways. During WWII producing engines for tanks.
After WWII automotive production never restarted and in 1960 was purchased by Daimler Benz.
In 1997 Mercedes presented a Maybach concept at the Tokyo Motorshow and went on to produce two models the Maybach 57 and Maybach 62 at differing lengths. Built alongside the alongside the flagship Mercedes S class. The cars were both ultra exclusive and ultra luxurious with predicted sales figures of 1000 units per year worldwide.

However falling sales in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis forced parent company Mercedes to reconsider the Maybach brand, despite there being talks with Aston Martin to engineer and style the next generation of Maybach models along with the next generation of Lagonda models, Maybach ceased operating as a separate marque in 2012. Instead Mercedes spoke about developing an ultra luxury version their flagship S class.

In 2015, Mercedes brought back the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes lineup, representing advanced luxury. The first model produced was the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, designed to be pitched against the Bentley Mulsanne and Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII At 5,453 mm (214.7 in) long with a wheelbase of 3,365 mm (132.5 in), the new model is approximately 20 cm (7.8 inches) greater in both dimensions compared to the long-wheelbase S-Class models. The Mercedes-Maybach is available as S 500 and S 600 models with 4MATIC optional with the V8 engine and V12 for the latter.
