Hauntingly Holey

A vandalized window screen with broken glass panes behind. It is a sad subject. However, I thought it was an interesting one because of all the textures and details and the surreal, sinister blackness behind the window. It is quite a contrast to the mostly neat and tidy nature of both our town and Switzerland in general 

Vandalism of any kind (other than some tagging of walls) is rare in small, pretty, quiet Riehen. However, there was a really nasty bit done in 2018. Riehen's main street is a two-lane artery that leads south to Basel City and north to the local border with Germany. As part of some street renovation, a series of Ginko saplings were planted in the median near the north end. One night, someone cut them all down. They were replanted. Someone did it again. The stumps remain as testimony. These were truly mean deeds. They did nothing except make ordinary people angry and waste tax dollars. I guess that was the idea.  

Location: An ancient, currently unused storage building, near the Dorf Kern (Village central area) Riehen BS Switzerland.
