Pike's Gun Ports - a photo on Flickriver

Pike's Gun Ports

            One end of what is known as the Citadel at Fort Pike. The fort was built to guard the Rigolets Pass, near New Orleans. Built in 1818 and operated until 1890 to guard against British re-invasion of the United States. The square openings are rifle ports which served both as a barracks and a last line of defense for Fort Pike. If the enemy to get over the walls, the fort's garrison could retreat to the Citadel and continue to fight the enemy using the rifle ports. To the right is the sea side walls arched entrances to the casemates or cannon emplacements to fight an enemy approaching by water.
