A Pinky Schooner and Betsy D Sharpie

The schooner race at Port Townsends Wooden Boat Festival is open to any sailboats with 2 masts or more with fore and aft rigging. . The dark boat appears to be a New England style pinky schooner with its high pointed stern. As a fishing boat, they would have a slot in that stern to sweep out the fishing waste. The other boat is Betsy D, a 35.5 ft sharpie built in Anacortes in 1977. The sail rig is consists of two solid, unstayed spars, with sprit-booms that are tensioned with “snotter lines” against lashings on the mast. Oddly, the sails inconveiently reef vertically; the snotter lines are eased and the luff of the sail is gathered at the mast. They are shallow draft and use a centerboard as needed.
