Simon Stocken holding his magnum opus. He started work on it in 2003 and finished in 2014, having spent some 300 man-hrs (not sure if that was in the cutting or the assembly). The Queen's puzzle is a 2,512pc 5-layer jigsaw, which was presented to the Queen in honour of her Golden Jubilee and later was released to allow it to be exhibited in Washington at the AGPC. The image is a painting by Geoffrey Grinling.

Simon told us that on two occasions the puzzle was unravelled - once within his family circle and again when it was on display at the AGPC, when it collapsed from a vertical position high on a wall. He brought it back in bagged areas and it was a long while before he was able to reassemble it. The puzzle has to be assembled in a specific order.

This second disaster had the benefit of allowing time-lapse photography to be done, and Simon showed us a prototype 90s video at the 2015 BCD House Party. (It was fantastic to see Sir Walter in the flesh at my BCD Meeting and we were very grateful to Simon and Peter, who stopped by on the way to a family occasion.)

The video lasts about 4 minutes and shows the dissassembly and reassembly of the 5-layer 2,512pc jigsaw to the accompaniment of the William Tell Overture, revealing text and a riddle within. (I will put the riddling text with another photo in a comment on the link below.)
