Victory Gold Box 300pc A New Love Song Whimsies Out IMG_1623

            Vernon de Beauvoir Ward (1905 – 1985) was a highly successful commercial artist noted for his works of flowers, birds and Edwardian subjects. The genre painting used for this jigsaw portrays an 18thC London street scene, in which a young woman is selling the sheet music for the latest love song to a couple walking through the piazza in Covent Garden, London.

This 300pc Victory Gold Box jigsaw puzzle shows the usual rather formless linear whimsies typical of this firm's work, although their arrangement is less regular than in many of their puzzles. There is no line-cutting in this puzzle and the top and lower edge pieces show a series of pin marks - evidence for stack-cutting. There is no image to work from, and I resisted the temptation to look at the other identical puzzles whilst assembling it, but it wasn't very difficult.

The painting was obviously used for a number of different sized-jigsaws and ranges by Victory. Jigsaw Julie has a smaller 100pc jigsaw. A Gold Box Supercut version also offers no image to work from, but a superior puzzle with a wavy edge and significant amounts of colour-line cutting. This is where the hand-cutter follows the outlines in the image, so that no clues are given to the colour or texture of pieces in adjacent areas.

Similar paintings by Vernon Ward in the same genre were used for a 350pc standard range Victory jigsaw 'Apples round and sound'. The box features a large image of the painting and I expect that the cut will be quite ordinary. (When I do it I will post details of the cut for comparison - perhaps I'll also be able to mix them together and solve the two simultaneously.)'
I have also seen a jigsaw of a similar image by Vernon Ward featuring a strawberry vendor.
