Crater Lake & Wizard Island '22 - a photo on Flickriver

            Crater Lake is located in south-central Oregon.  It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park, famous for its deep blue color and water clarity.  It was formed about 7700 years ago when Mt. Mazama erupted and this caldera was left.  

The lake is the deepest in the United States at about 1950 feet deep.  This is deeper than Lake Superior.  

Wizard Island shown above is a cinder cone formation.  Crater Lake is at an elevation of 6178 feet and due to this has some evidence of snow about 9 months out of the year.  Some is seen in this July photograph both at the waters edge and on the top of the formation.

Mt. Thielsen is seen in the distance in the right background.  It has an elevation of 9148 feet.
