            Il Taj Mahal è uno dei monumenti più famosi e visitati dell’India, ma non molti sanno che in realtà la sua costruzione è legata a una storia d’amore.

Situato ad Agra, nello stato di Uttar Pradesh dell’India settentrionale, Il Taj Mahal - il cui significato letterale è "Palazzo della Corona" oppure "Corona del Palazzo" - ha origine nel 1631, anno in cui, dando alla luce il suo quattordicesimo figlio, morì Arjumand Banu Begum, la moglie preferita dell’imperatore, conosciuta anche con il nome di Mumtaz Mahal che in persiano significa "la luce del palazzo".

Si dice che in punto di morte Mumtaz Mahal chiese all’imperatore moghul Shah Jahan di mantenere quattro promesse. La prima era quella di ricordarla con un imponente monumento, le altre tre promesse erano più legate ad aspetti familiari: dare una nuova madre ai loro figli, essere sempre buono e comprensivo con loro, promettere di visitare la sua tomba nell'anniversario della sua morte...
