Pygmy Shrew eating beetle. - a photo on Flickriver

            This minute mammal's body is hardly larger than the top joint of my thumb (excluding tail) and probably lighter. This beetle, then, was a major capture for it and a struggle to extract from the grass and subdue. The effort was worth it for a substantial meal of which every fragment was consumed.
