Ginkgo biloba - Musteristré - a photo on Flickriver

Zum Jahrtausendwechsel erklärte das deutsche „Kuratorium Baum des Jahres“ Ginkgo biloba zum Mahnmal für Umweltschutz und Frieden und zum Baum des Jahrtausends. 
Der Ginkgo ist ein „lebendes Fossil“. 

Musteristré (fræðiheiti Ginkgo biloba) er tré sem upprunnið er í Kína og er einstakt á þann hátt að það er ekki skylt öðrum trjátegundum. Musteristré eru lifandi steingervingar en þau eru lík 270 milljón ára gömlum steingervingum af trjám. Musteristré er af ættbálki musterisviða en talið var allir musterisviðir hafa orðið aldauða á síðustu ísöld þar til eina núlifandi tegund þeirra fannst í garði kínversks klausturs um árið 1690. Trén hafa verið ræktuð mjög lengi og er notuð í fæðuframleiðslu og til að vinna úr þeim lækningalyf. Musteristré hafa mikið þol gegn skordýrum og ýmsum sjúkdómum og hamförum. Bæði kven- og karlkynsplöntur hafa leðurkennd blævængslöguð blöð. Kventréð ber illa lyktandi aldin á stærð við apríkósu og er kjarni þess ætur. Musteristré eru stór tré sem ná 20 - 35 m hæð en geta orðið yfir 50 m.
