The Green Pools of the South Fork - a photo on Flickriver

            Rock hopping along the south fork of the Merced River, well upstream of Wawona, on a cloudy day in midsummer.  The green comes from a combination of the natural color of the granite when wet (see the rock at center) and a thin layer of moss or algae that forms as summer wears on and water levels in Yosemite get lower.  The water itself is crystal clear, and this is one of my favorite rivers to swim in.
