The Lines Have Been Drawn - a photo on Flickriver

            The sky was dark, and the wind was fierce at Merritt Island NWR, and about 200 Black Skimmers struggled to hold position.  They faced into the wind and held tight. The stronger the wind gusts, the closer the lines of birds drew together tightly. Occasionally, the lead birds would rise up to test their wings in flight, but would be blown to the back of the wedge of birds. The rest of the birds inched forward, filling the void.

It was a remarkable display to observe for nearly an hour, until a motorist unnecessarily decided to drive into that area of the parking lot, sending the birds aloft. They struggled to return to their aerodynamic wedge, but required of a great deal of energy to do so.
