Forest of the Oregon Coast - a photo on Flickriver

            This beautiful forest is just north of the edge of the redwoods and features Sitka spruce.  Picea sitchensis is a large coniferous evergreen tree growing up to 80 m tall. With a trunk diameter of up to 5 m., it is by far the largest species of spruce.  It is also the fifth largest conifer in the world (behind giant sequoia, coast redwood, kauri and western redcedar);and the third tallest  (after coast redwood and coast Douglas-fir).  Sitka spruce is a long-lived tree, with individuals over 700 years old known. Because it grows rapidly under favorable conditions, large size may not indicate exceptional age.
