Matroesjka's komen oorspronkelijk uit Rusland, maar zijn inmiddels over de gehele wereld bekend. De naam "matroesjka" is afkomstig van het Russische woord matrjosjka (матрёшка), dat het koosnaampje is van Matrjona, een boerinnennaam.

De traditionele matroesjka beeldt een boerenmeisje uit, maar er bestaan ook varianten met beeltenissen van politici / Ik vind alleen de boerenmeisjes leuk!
