Greek balcony

            Grandioser Ausblick vom bezaubernden Bergdorf Olymbos im Norden von Karpathos. Olymbos wurde ab dem 7. Jahrhundert erbaut, als Fluchtort der Einwohner der einstigen Siedlungen Vourgounda, Tristomo und der Insel Saria und des antiken Vrykous, die vor den häufigen Überfällen durch Piraten und Sarazenen in die Berge flohen. Dort, von der Außenwelt weitgehend isoliert, hat sich bis heute nicht nur der altertümliche dorisch beeinflusste Dialekt in der Sprache der Olymbites (den Einwohnern des Dorfes) gehalten, sondern auch Kunst, Kultur und Bräuche, die überall im Ort anzutreffen sind.

Spectacular view from the charming mountain village Olymbos in the north of Karpathos. Olymbos was built in the 7th century, as a refuge for the inhabitants of the former settlements Vourgounda, Tristomo and the island of Saria and the ancient Vrykous, who fled to the mountains from the frequent raids of pirates and Saracens. There, largely isolated from the outside world, not only the ancient Doric-influenced dialect has kept in the language of the Olymbites (the inhabitants of the village), but also art, culture and customs that can be found everywhere in the town.
