Number 15 Newgate, York - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the end of a row of two room houses which were built on the edge of St Sampson's churchyard in 1337. The survivors of the row extend from here to 12 Newgate but all the rest were heightened in the 19th century, number 12 gaining a former window to light an attic room which is visible on the right of the drawing. Each house had a single room on the ground floor and another on the first floor which was jettied, or overhanging, to both front and rear. There were originally probably 10-12 houses, built to finance chantry chapels in St Sampson's church.
