A very short visit to Kaanapali- the Maui’s signature beach on the day before leaving Maui, Hawaii.

On the last day we had a very short visit to Lahaina and one of the most famous beaches- the Kaanapali Beach. I was really amazed by its wonderful natural treasures and could easily understand why this is known to be one of the most popular spots for the beach lovers in the world. Avoiding the most tourist congregated resort areas we parked our car on a rocky beach to take a few shots.

Kaanapali
Kaanapali is known to be the North-West Maui's Signature beach. Its about 50 minutes from Kahului Airport, and the beach sits just north of the town of Lahaina. With three miles of white sand and crystal clear water Kaanapali Beach was once named America’s Best Beach. This is also an excellent place to catch sight of the many diverse creatures that call the Pacific home. The waters here are shallow, making them good for snorkeling, and a world class whale sighting destination for the travelers.
Kaanapali was Hawaii’s first planned resort and has become a model for resorts around the globe. Fronting Kaanapali there is the open air Whalers Village. There is a renowned whaling museum and free Hawaiian entertainment in Kaanapali. Kaanapali has two championship golf courses, the Royal Kaanapali and the Kaanapali Kai, where you may even see a breaching whale as you try to line up a shot. One of Kaanapali Beach’s most famous attractions is the daily cliff diving ceremony off the beach’s northernmost cliffs known as Puu Kekaa, or Black Rock, which pays tribute to King Kahekili, Maui's last independent king who ruled in the 18th century.

Whale watching
Humpback whales are the focus of attention from December thru May when they are here in abundant numbers. The rest of the year is spent observing resident pods of Pilot whales, dolphins, and other toothed whales.
The magnificent Humpback whales begin showing up in Hawaiian waters in December, having migrated from their North Pacific summer feeding grounds. They typically remain until spring, circulating throughout the islands, mating and giving birth to their young, then migrate back north to the Gulf of Alaska and their food sources

Why Lahaina Harbor is the Best for Boats
The West Maui Mountains and Mount Haleakala create a wind tunnel right up the middle of Maui and around the east side of the island. Lahaina, though, sits in the lee of the normal north/east trade wind pattern. No wind equals smooth seas!
