A brief description:
It is one of the largest giant open-air rock reliefs in the world. Measuring 96 by 43 feet, is a giant open-air rock relief carved on two monolithic rock boulders.
The legend depicted in the relief is the mythological story of the descent of goddess Ganga as the sacred river Ganges to earth from heaven, led by Bhagiratha, the legendary king of the Ikshvaku dynasty.
It is another remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 in mahabalipuram.

[The mythological story of king Bhagiratha (in short):
Bhagiratha when became prince learnt the painful end of his forefathers, who were unable to attain region of gods, with a sorrowful heart made over his kingly duties to his minister and went for practicing austerities to Himalayas. He did penance for a thousand years (according to god timeline) on the advice of his guru Trithala, to please Ganga, to gain the release of his 60,000 great-uncles (mythological numbers) from the curse of saint Kapila.

Ganga told him if she will descend from the sky to the earth, the force of her fall will be difficult to sustain. She asked him to obtain the favour from Shiva, as no one except him is able to sustain her. He then did severe penance for Shiva and asked him to do so. Shiva granted him the boon, which eventually led to descent of the goddess Ganga in the form of the river Ganges, to the earth, and filling the sea. ]

Mahabalipuram- A general description:
Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, is a town in Chengalpattu district in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is best known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 7th- and 8th-century Hindu Group of Monuments. The town was named after Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who was also known as Mahamalla. It is about 60 kilometres south of Chennai. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Mahabalipuram was the capital region during the reign of Pallava Dynasty in the 7th century AD. The Pallava rulers used to hold the definitive command in the southern part of India. The rulers were popular for their inclination towards Tamilian art and culture. The power and creativity was at its peak during the kingdom of Narasimha Varman-I and II. The rulers immortalized their glories with the splendid monuments they built. The Monuments reflect their finest architectural splendour, and rich cultural heritage of India.
