Spring watch in Bengal: A journey into heart of the forests of Raipur by river Kanshaboti, Bankura district, West Bengal, India- XX.

            On 9th of March, 2023, we set our journey from Midnapore town, to have a glimpse of spring colours at Raipur, a small village town in Bankura district. Being 65 km away from Midnapore town, Raipur is a fascinating destination to watch dazzling colours of ‘Polash’ (in Bengali), better known as “Flames of the forests” (Butea monosperma). Our prime destination was a small island, popularly known as Sobuj Deep (the green island), popped up from the middle of river Kansai (Kanshaboti), ten kilometres away from the town’s market. There is a beautiful forest resort amidst the grove of the lush green island. Early in the next morning, we made our way down the side of the resort to land on the sandy river bed. After the dry winter season the river turned up into several tiny shallow streams. We walked down the riverbed and crossed a knee deep stream to reach the opposite bank of the river, usually unexplored by lazy travellers. Scattered on the sandy bed, hundreds of rocks from old geological genre, pop up from the floor, as if, like aliens from the lost world. Their ages are marked by magnificent carvings on them by turbulent water, might be for millions of years, culminating into wonderful treasures of artefacts, created by the supreme artist, the mother nature. 
On the opposite bank, along the upward slopes of the riverside, are the dense forests of Polash. The morning sun was peeping through an unwanted piece of cloud, as if, was indulging us to come atop the cliff at the call of a treasue, yet to be discovered. One cannot resist such seductive call of the flowers, the brand ambassador, in the time of spring amidst the laterite soil land of Bengal. The moment we reached atop the we turned speechless. A vast land beyond the cliff is a dense forest of Polash, as if, set in fire of spring...!!!
